Garden Design

You may have moved into a new property, had changes in lifestyle or just want a change. But whatever the reason you're considering a garden design, we can help.

Our Approach

At Tend & Flourish, we offer garden design services for clients who want to make more of their outdoor space — whether you need practical advice, a clear planting plan, or support bringing a full garden transformation to life.

Our approach combines thoughtful design, practical horticultural knowledge and a love of natural, seasonal planting. Each garden is treated individually, with careful attention to how you want to use the space, the character of your home, the existing conditions and the level of maintenance you feel comfortable with.

The first question we're always asked is about cost. This is difficult as there are so many factors to take into account. Such as:

  • Size of the area

  • What is already there

  • How much involvement you'd like us to have

  • What sort of garden do you want

  • Conditions: soil, ground gradient, age of property etc.

  • and so many more...

To make it easier, we've split our services into 3 packages and given a guide 'From' price for a level medium sized garden. The reality is that the service will depend on your needs. But hopefully this will give some indication as to what you'd need to budget for.

Design Packages

Every garden and the people who use it are different. So we don't sell design packages. But to give you an idea of what the costs could be, we've put together three outlines based on the average medium sized garden of around 100-300m2. That way you'll have an idea of what a design would cost before you start the process. Once we've seen your garden, we'll be able to provide you with a full estimate based on your space.

What would affect the costs?

Final design fees depend on the size and complexity of the garden, the level of detail required, the amount of planting or hard landscaping involved, and whether you would like support with sourcing, contractors or implementation.

After an initial conversation, I will provide a clear written quote so you know what is included before any work begins.

How the Design Process Works

Every garden is different, but most projects follow a simple step-by-step process.

1. Initial enquiry

You get in touch to tell us a little about your garden, what you would like help with and which type of service you are interested in.

2. Introductory conversation

We discuss your garden, your priorities, your budget and the level of support you need. This helps identify which package is most suitable.

3. Site visit

We visit the garden to understand the space properly, including:

  • How the garden is currently used

  • Sun, shade and aspect

  • Soil and drainage

  • Existing plants and features

  • Views, privacy and boundaries

  • Access and practical considerations

  • Your preferred style and maintenance level

For the 'Design' and 'Comprehensive' services, there will likely be more than one site visit. For larger spaces we would recommend a site survey which would be an additional £250.

4. Design work

Depending on the package, I prepare written recommendations, drawings, planting plans, schedules or implementation documents.

5. Review and next steps

For design packages, we review the plans together and agree any changes. You can then choose whether to implement the garden yourself, use your own contractor, or ask for further support.

FAQ's

Can I change the service after we've already begun?

You can always add additional services, as everything we do is tailored to your needs. But you can't cancel services that have already been delivered or part delivered.

Do we have to pay upfront?

The point of payment will depend on the services you require. For the 'Lite' and 'Design' packages, we'll ask for payment after the initial discussion but before the consultation. For the 'Complete', payment will be in stages which align with the project plan.

Do I need a full garden design, or can I just book a consultation?

You do not always need a full garden design.

A consultation may be enough if your garden already has a good basic layout but needs better planting, clearer direction or practical improvements.

A full design is more suitable if you want to change the structure, layout, flow or overall feel of the garden, or if you need plans to work from before investing in landscaping or planting.

Can you help if I only have a small garden?

Yes. Small gardens often benefit greatly from careful design because every part of the space needs to work hard.

A small garden may need:

  • Better use of space

  • Clearer structure

  • Multi-season planting

  • Screening or privacy

  • Container planting

  • Seating areas

  • Storage solutions

  • Low-maintenance planting

Even modest changes can make a small garden feel more considered, usable and inviting.

Can you design a low-maintenance garden?

Yes, although it is worth noting that no garden is completely maintenance-free.

A low-maintenance design can reduce the amount of regular work needed. The aim is to create a garden that is manageable, rather than one that needs constant attention.

Where can I learn more about you?

Yes. Existing plants and features can often be incorporated into the design where they are healthy, suitable and in the right place.

Retaining existing plants can help preserve maturity, reduce waste and manage the overall budget.

Are plants, materials and landscaping costs included in the design fee?

No. Design fees cover the design work, plans and agreed support.

Plants, materials, landscaping, contractor fees, surveys, specialist advice and delivery costs are usually charged separately.

This keeps the design fee clear and allows you to make informed decisions about the overall project budget.

How much should I budget for the whole garden project?

The design fee is only one part of the overall project budget.

The total cost will depend on:

  • Garden size

  • Amount of hard landscaping

  • Materials chosen

  • Plant quantities and plant sizes

  • Site access

  • Soil preparation

  • Drainage or level changes

  • Contractor costs

  • Whether the work is done in one phase or over time

If you have a budget in mind, it is helpful to discuss this early so the design can be realistic and achievable
